Greens for Breakfast

Presently, our family enjoys two green smoothies each day...one to start the day off with energy that lasts!  This morning I was playing around with some breakfast ingredients like yogurt and quinoa flakes (usually cooked like oatmeal) and it turned out to be a nice flavour and consistency!

Cabbage and beet tops are a really easy way for kids to get their raw greens in.  Their flavours are mild and the smoothie doesn't even look green...perfect for your first time smoothie drinkers (adults and kids a like).

breakfast ingredients

Greens for Breakfast recipe:
- 1 handful of shredded cabbage (coleslaw)
- 1 large beet top
- 1 peeled navel orange
- 1 frozen ripe banana
- 4 frozen strawberries
- 1/4 C quinoa flakes
- 1 tsp ground flax seed
- 1 tsp chia seed (salba)
- 1/2 C vanilla yogurt
- 1/2 C cherry pom juice
- 1 C pure water

- optional to add ice cubes for a thicker "slushy" texture
- optional to add 1-2 tsp honey to taste

Layer all the ingredients (in order listed) with the frozen ones at the top of the blender (added last).  The weight of the frozen ingredients gently pushes them to the bottom and blends the whole smoothie together effortlessly.  I used the pulse button, pushing it 5 times to break up the frozen fruit, then I pressed the 60 sec. button and let the OmniBlend smooth it all together.

Time Saving Tip:  pre-measure and wash enough fruit and veg. and freeze in separate containers.  All you have to do is add the fresh ingredients for a quick and healthy snack or meal.

Enjoy!
